Octavia & Mariquita?

1911 - 2011
By Alastair Mitchell and David Gray, A.Mylne & Co.

A Centenery re-match in 2011?

The two greatest yachts of the Edwardian era?

Alfred Mylne, Sir William Burton and "Octavia" are three names synonymous with yacht racing at the beginning of the 20th Century. Alfred Mylne’s designs and Sir William Burton’s exploits inspired a generation of professional and amateur yachtsmen (and women). Mylne’s design in particular carved a groove and style that many strove to emulate.

In 1910 Alfred Mylne designed the 19m yacht "Octavia" for Sir William. In 1911 she proceeded to win on overall points against two Fife designed and built 19m yachts, and one by Charles Nicholson, in some of the closest racing ever witnessed. They were called "The Big Four". The only surviving yacht of these is Fife's "Mariquita", whose grace and beauty is legendary.

The opportunity now presents itself to re-create the original drama and excitement of this Golden Age of Edwardian yachting - but it will require someone special to take on the challenge, to build and race "Octavia" once again. Could this be you?
