Historical Context
Alfred Mylne (1881–1963) was a Scottish yacht designer of considerable standing, based in Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire. His practice spanned the early twentieth century, encompassing both racing and cruising designs. The archive preserves approximately 500 designs in various states of documentation. Many designs were built; others remained unexecuted or exist only as preliminary sketches. The survival of drawings without comprehensive written records reflects the nature of design practice in this period, when verbal commissions and informal arrangements were common. Design numbering systems varied according to the office's practices at different periods.
