Historical Context

A. Mylne & Co. began designing motor yachts in the early 1900s as internal combustion engines became reliable and economical. By 1916, when design 245 was produced, the office had established a substantial portfolio of single and twin screw types ranging from small coastal vessels to larger cruising yachts. The 1920s saw continued demand for such designs, particularly among owner-operators and small commercial users. Ben's construction in 1927 fell within this active period. Hugh MacLean & Sons represented the network of Clyde yards, from large shipbuilders to specialist small-craft builders, that brought Mylne designs into being. The loss of Ben reflects the inevitable attrition of wooden vessels over the decades.
