Historical Context
A. Mylne & Co., founded in 1896, had by 1905 established itself as a leading Scottish yacht design office. The early 1900s saw the firm designing vessels across a range of sizes and types, from small cruising yachts to more substantial ocean-going craft. Design 118, Elspeth, reflects the growing market for practical, seaworthy auxiliary yachts suited to British coastal cruising. The adoption of auxiliary engines was transforming yacht design during this period, and Mylne's designs of the era show careful integration of engine and sailing capability. Elspeth's modest proportions and yawl configuration are characteristic of the owner-cruising yachts that formed an important part of the office's work before the First World War.
