Historical Context

Design 135 (Ethilda) was produced in 1907, the eleventh year of A. Mylne & Co.'s operation. The office, established in Glasgow in 1896, was expanding its reputation beyond Scottish yards; commissions to Rock Ferry and other English builders indicate growing recognition south of the border. Small cruising yachts of this tonnage formed a significant portion of Mylne's output during the Edwardian period, reflecting demand for affordable, seaworthy craft suitable for amateur ownership. The 1951 engine installation reflects post-war modernisation; many small yachts of Edwardian origin received petrol or diesel power as their original sailing rigs aged. Florenien's survival makes her an important historical example of this transitional phase.
