Historical Context

Design 272, the Gannet class, emerged from A. Mylne & Co. during the early 1920s, a period when the office was consolidating its reputation for practical cruising designs. The auxiliary cutter remained a favoured type among British yacht owners seeking vessels capable of extended cruising under sail or power. Rowlands Dockyard in Bangor, a Welsh establishment, was one of several regional builders who executed Mylne designs. The period 1920–1930 saw A. Mylne & Co. produce designs suited to both amateur owners and professional fishermen-turned-yachtsmen. The survival of Gannet into the present day is significant; many yachts of this vintage and size were lost to wartime requisition, deterioration, or scrapping during the mid-twentieth century.
