Historical Context

Hera was designed in 1907, during the consolidation of A. Mylne & Co.'s reputation as a leading designer of racing and cruising yachts. The International Metre Class, ratified in 1906 under the auspices of the Yacht Racing Association, represented an important move towards standardised racing classifications. Mylne, alongside contemporaries such as G.L. Watson and William Fife III, engaged actively with the Metre classes, which became a principal outlet for competitive yacht design in the first half of the twentieth century. The choice of McAllister of Dumbarton as builder reflects the continued importance of Clyde shipyards in Scottish yacht construction, though the scale and specialisation of such work was shifting as the century progressed.
