Historical Context

A. Mylne & Co. was established in 1896 and became one of Scotland's leading yacht design offices, producing designs for vessels ranging from small cruising yachts to larger racing and cruising craft. Design 46, dating to 1899, falls within the office's formative period, during which Mylne developed his reputation for practical, seaworthy cruising designs. The employment of local Tarbert builder A M Dickies reflects the strong boatbuilding tradition of Argyll and Bute during this era. The mid-twentieth-century motor installation represents a common practice whereby sailing yachts of the Victorian and Edwardian era were adapted to changing maritime conditions and owner preferences.
