Historical Context

A. Mylne & Co., established in 1896, maintained a broad design practice spanning racing yachts, cruising craft, and working vessels throughout the twentieth century. The 1930s represented a period of transition in yacht design, with motor power increasingly supplementing or replacing sail. Design 372, executed in 1935, falls within this transitional phase. Small motor yachts of modest dimensions were well-suited to British coastal cruising and reflected both improved engine reliability and changing leisure patterns. Bute Slip Dock represented one of several Scottish builders executing Mylne designs during this period. The survival of Saskia of Rhu provides historical evidence of the practical, unpretentious cruising craft that formed part of Mylne's broader design output, distinct from the celebrated racing and larger cruising yachts for which the office is also known.
