Historical Context
Design No. 427 was created during Alfred Mylne II's tenure at the design office in the early 1950s, a decade that saw A. Mylne & Co. shift increasingly toward modest, owner-built cruising yachts as the market for larger vessels contracted. The post-war period saw steady demand for seaworthy coastal and cruising designs suited to amateur ownership. Bute Slip Dock, the builder, was a long-established yard on the Isle of Bute and had constructed several Mylne designs. StarMinx's wooden construction and traditional layout reflect standard practice for British yacht building at the time, before the gradual industry shift towards fibreglass construction in the 1960s.
