Historical Context
Design 496 was created during a period when A. Mylne & Co., founded in 1896, remained active in yacht design despite post-war changes in the leisure sailing market. By the 1970s, the office had shifted emphasis from the large racing and cruising yachts of its early decades towards smaller, more affordable auxiliary vessels suited to amateur ownership. The ketch design remained popular for vessels in the 25–40 foot range, particularly among British and Northern European builders. Glasgow's maritime industry, whilst diminished from its Victorian peak, still supported specialist yacht builders. M MacDonald & Son Ltd belonged to a generation of builders who maintained craft expertise in timber or composite construction as larger commercial shipbuilding declined. Stealaway represents a late-period Mylne design: functional, modest in scale, and intended for practical use rather than prestige.
