Historical Context

Susette's design dates to 1896, early in A. Mylne & Co.'s trading life. The practice, established in Glasgow, was beginning to develop the reputation for competent, seaworthy small craft that would expand through the Edwardian period and beyond. Designs of this era—compact, workable cruising yachts of 19 to 30 feet—formed the backbone of Mylne commissions. Sandbank, across the Clyde from Dunoon, was a centre of boat building and repair; A. Robertson & Sons belonged to that tradition of local craftsmen who understood the requirements of small-boat sailing on the Firth of Clyde and west coast waters. The survival rate of wooden yachts of this age is low; whether Susette remains extant is not established.
