At 20.8 feet on the waterline with a beam of 7 feet and draft of 5 feet, she carries 370 square feet of sail. The vessel remains in existence, though her engine has been removed. Historical Context
A. Mylne & Co. was established in 1896, making 1900 a year of growing output and reputation. Design 52, which produced Sapphire, falls within the period when Mylne was developing his characteristic approach to small cruising and day-sailing yachts. The use of P R Maclean of Rosneath as builder reflects the concentration of quality yacht construction on the Clyde during this period. Rosneath, on the eastern shore of the Gareloch, was home to several respected builders. Mylne's early designs emphasised practical, seaworthy small yachts suited to Scottish waters and modest ownership. The survival of Windhover II, now over 120 years old, provides physical evidence of the durability of these designs and the robustness of the pitch pine and oak construction methods employed.
