Historical Context

Octavia was designed and built in 1911, a year of significant activity for A. Mylne & Co. The firm had been operating for fifteen years and was firmly established among Scotland's premier yacht design offices. The early twentieth century represented a productive phase for Mylne, who worked across a broad spectrum of vessel types and sizes. McAllister of Dumbarton, the builder, was itself an established and respected yard on the Clyde, capable of executing designs to high standards. The dimensions and construction of Octavia reflect the preferences of yacht owners in the pre-First World War period, when wooden construction remained standard and cruising yachts of this size were numerous.
