Historical Context

By 1938, A. Mylne & Co. had established itself as a leading force in Scottish yacht design, operating from the mid-1890s through to around 1980. Design 393 falls within the firm's mature period, when the office was producing cruising yachts suited to Scottish waters and beyond. The late 1930s saw a particular emphasis on modest, seaworthy designs capable of sustained sailing. Bute Slip Dock, the builder, was one of several established yards in Scottish shipbuilding regions. Pandora's survival represents continuity of the small-craft tradition that Mylne championed, distinct from the grand racing and cruising yachts that dominated contemporary maritime attention.
