Historical Context

Design 398 emerges from A. Mylne & Co.'s prolific inter-war period, when the office produced designs across multiple size ranges and types. The nine-year gap between design (1939) and build (1948) reflects the disruption of World War II and the gradual recovery of private yacht construction in Scotland thereafter. Bute Slip Dock's commission of the design speaks to the regional reputation of Mylne's work in west-coast yards. Post-war construction of pre-war designs was economically rational: proven designs required no new development outlay, and builders possessed the original lofts and building plans.
