Historical Context

A. Mylne & Co. was founded in 1896 by Alfred Mylne, establishing itself as a leading Scottish yacht design office during the Edwardian era. Design 41, completed in 1899, falls within the office's earliest period of productivity, a time when Mylne was refining his approach to cruising and racing yacht design. P. Jones & Son of Gourock was one of several competent builders on the Clyde and West Coast with whom Mylne worked regularly. The dimensions and sail plan of Snarleyow are consistent with the mixed-purpose yachts—neither purely racing machines nor heavy cruisers—that formed much of Mylne's portfolio in these years.
