Historical Context

Design 508 was produced in 1980, during the final years of A. Mylne & Co.'s operations as a yacht design office. The office, founded in 1896, maintained activity through much of the twentieth century. Twin screw motor yachts represented a significant category of work for Mylne, particularly from the mid-twentieth century onwards, offering owners improved manoeuvrability and redundancy. The sparse documentary record for Spanish John I is not unusual for vessels designed in this later period, when design office records became increasingly dispersed and client confidentiality meant fewer yachts received formal publication.
