Historical Context

A. Mylne & Co. established itself as a leading Scottish yacht design office in the 1890s. By 1904, when design 104 was created, the practice was producing a varied portfolio of cruising yachts and racers suited to Scottish and Northern waters. The Sunbeam type, represented here by Sunbeam II, exemplifies the modest, practical craft that formed much of Mylne's bread-and-butter work during the Edwardian era. A. Robertson & Sons, based at Sandbank on the Clyde, was one of several builders who regularly constructed Mylne designs. The early 1900s saw steady demand for small cruising yachts among middle-class sailing enthusiasts.
