Historical Context

Design 177 was produced during a period of steady output at A. Mylne & Co., when the office was consolidating its reputation for practical cruising yachts suited to Scottish and northern waters. The choice of A. Robertson & Sons as builder reflects the strong working relationships between Mylne and Clyde shipyards. Sandbank remained an active centre for yacht construction through the early twentieth century, building designs for local and national clients. The auxiliary cutter type was gaining favour among owners for whom pure sailing no longer sufficed, and Mylne's design practice reflected this shift in market demand.
