Historical Context
Design 193 was produced during A. Mylne & Co.'s early maturity as a design office. Founded in 1896, the practice had by 1911 established a strong reputation for practical, seaworthy cruising yachts suited to Scottish and Northern waters. The auxiliary yawl type was a staple of Mylne's output, combining the efficiency of fore-and-aft sail with the security of an auxiliary engine — then still a novelty for many vessels. Hilditch, the builder, was an established shipwright at Carrickfergus, County Antrim, where several Mylne designs were executed during this period. Vaila's survival is significant for the register, as many vessels from the early 1900s have been lost or broken up.
