Historical Context

Design 414, named Trondra, emerged from A. Mylne & Co.'s portfolio in 1948, during the post-war reconstruction period when British yacht design was adapting to changing economic conditions and the renewal of recreational sailing. The Trondra class auxiliary cutter represented a pragmatic evolution: a modest but seaworthy cruising yacht combining sail and engine power. Bute Slip Dock, where Fraoich was built, had a long tradition of quality small-craft construction. The commissioning of Fraoich in 1951 places her in the early phase of post-war yacht building, when A. Mylne & Co. continued to develop designs for the recovering leisure sailing market. The use of Stuart Turner engines was standard practice among British yacht builders of the period.
