Historical Context
Design 48 (Corona) was registered in 1900, placing it among the early designs produced by A. Mylne & Co. during the office's formative years. Alfred Mylne established his practice in 1896, and by 1900 he was receiving commissions from builders and owners throughout Scotland. Rosneath, on the western shore of the Gareloch, was an active centre of small-yacht building and yacht-related activity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Builders such as P R Maclean worked with designs from various sources, and the engagement with A. Mylne & Co. reflects the growing reputation of the Helensburgh-based office. The Design 48 specifications—moderate dimensions, conservative draft, and moderate sail area—reflect practical thinking about small-craft performance and seaworthiness.
