Historical Context
A. Mylne & Co., based in Glasgow, maintained an extensive design office from 1896 until around 1980, producing hundreds of designs across multiple classes and purposes. The Meraquita design of 1934 falls within the firm's mature period, when Alfred Mylne had established himself as a leading Scottish yacht designer. The 1930s saw Mylne producing numerous small cruising designs suited to Scottish lochs and coastal waters, many of which proved sufficiently robust in concept to warrant later construction in modern materials. The decision to build Mercantile in GRP in 1991 reflects the design's fundamental soundness and the post-war shift towards composite construction in small yacht building.
