Historical Context

The late 1930s represented a transitional period for A. Mylne & Co. The office had been established in 1896 and had developed a substantial reputation for yacht design across a range of sizes and types. By 1934, when Design 370 (Meraquita) was created, the firm was producing designs for both larger cruising yachts and smaller utility and cruising craft intended for provincial builders. The commission of Troika to A M Dickies in Bangor demonstrates the geographical spread of the office's work throughout the British Isles. The approach of the Second World War would soon curtail civilian yacht building, making vessels built in 1938 part of the final cohort of pre-war construction.
