Historical Context

A. Mylne & Co.'s design office was particularly active during the 1930s, producing designs across a range of cruising and racing classes. The Meraquita design (370) emerged in 1934, during a period when moderate-sized cruising yachts were in demand amongst amateur owners. The commissioning of Mercury by A M Dickies in 1938 reflects the continued reach of Mylne designs into Welsh boatbuilding circles. Bangor, as a coastal town with established maritime traditions, maintained several boatbuilders during this era. The survival of Mercury provides evidence of both the seaworthiness of Mylne's designs and the competence of provincial builders in executing them to lasting effect.
